WWDC 2012: The New MacBook Air

The new MacBook Airs have got new minor spec updates and a few hardware changes. Retina display was expected to be included on the MacBook Air also but that did not happen.

The MacBook Airs now include the next generation of Intel Core processors codenamed Ivy Bridge. On the MacBook Air 11", there is a 1.7GHz processor which can go upto 2.6GHz. On the MacBook Air 13" there is a 1.8GHz processor which can go upto 2.8GHz.

They now also include 2 USB 3 I/O technology which is about 10x faster than USB 2. Unlike other manufacturers, who use separate ports for USB 2 and 3, Apple has used 2 USB ports that support both USB 2 and 3. The new MacBook Air can now also be configured to have upto 512GB of SSD storage, upgraded from 256GB in the previous generation.

The new Airs also have the next generation of MagSafe connectors, MagSafe 2, which is shorter in its height, but longer in its width so that they allow Apple notebooks to be made even thinner. The new Airs can be configure with upto 8 GB of DDR3L RAM. It has the same Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics and FaceTime HD camera in the front. The 11" Airs have the same price starting from $999 while the 13" Airs have received a $100 drop, now starting from $1199.
